The Banyan Ficus, or Fig bonsai vies with the Chinese Elm to be the most popular species of bonsai tree. Ideal for beginners as both these species are easy to keep, being more forgiving should you forget to water them (please don’t!). The Ficus is evergreen and can be grown indoors, or outdoors once the minimum temperature reaches 15°C. This tree likes high humidity, so spray with water each day at the same time you water, or better still regularly add water to the under tray. When the Ficus enjoys high humidity it will often grow aerial roots which enhance the look of the tree. Ficus is a tropical species which has the advantage of not needing a dormancy period in winter.
- Watering: try not to let the soil dry out. Keep watering until you see some run out of the holes in the bottom of the pot, then you will know some has reached the roots.
- Feed every 2 weeks with a good indoor plantfood between early March and the end of October.
- Position: a Ficus does not like direct sunlight which could burn the leaves.
